Flower and Delicious Sunflower Bread

The sunflower family (Helianthus) has perfect flowers, with male and female organs both on the same flower, but with either the male or the female organ infertile. What is usually called the flower is actually a composite flower, made up of numerous flowers or florets crowded together. Once the plant has flowered, usually in summer, it produces a sweet pollen mixture that lures bees and other insects. When the bees arrive, they get their feet wet with the pollen as they drink the plant's nectar. The plant relies on the sperm-producing pollen coming into contact with the egg-containing stigma. The yellow pollen is transferred from the insect's hairy legs to the stigma. This is the first step in sunflower reproduction. Once the pollen goes down the stigma, it releases sperm into the ovary. An available egg receives the sperm, and the egg is fertilized with a meat-bearing seed. The pollen/sperm can belong to the original plant or may come from another sunflower. Self-pollination is a mechanism that the sunflower uses to stay alive. On the occasion where the stigma receives no pollen, the stigma will twist and wrap itself around its own pollen. Seeds created by self-pollination will only produce flowers that look like the original plant, so no hybridization will have occurred. Sunflowers are fast reproducers, and one plant can create dozens of others. Plant seeds about an 1 inch below the ground. Germination occurs quickly, usually between 5 and 10 days, but spring crops produce more plants than summer crops. Spring crops are planted in April and May. Summer crops go in the ground in June and July. When the back of the plant's head turns brown, it is ready for harvesting. The Sunflower’s symbiotic relationships with other plants usually benefit the Sunflower, because the sunflower takes all the nutrients and water from the soil for itself and takes over (hence, its invasive). The Sunflower’s relationships with bees and birds and humans is much less greedy, however. The huge face of the Sunflower feeds many bees with its sweet pollen, baseball players and birds feed off of its multitudes of plump, ripe seeds. The Sunflower was first cultivated in mesoamerica (present day Mexico) in 2600 BC (A Gardeners Guide, 1996) and there is evidence that it was being used by the Native Americans in the Mississippi valley in around the same time. It is widely believed that Sunflowers were cultivated for religious purposes having to do with various tribal sun deities. They also used the oil for religious rituals having to do with warfare, bread, medical ointments, dyes and body paints. When Francisco Pizzaro ravaged and plundered the welcoming tribes of Peru, he came across gold paintings and idols of Sunflowers, which he stole and brought back to europe in the 16th century. The Europeans have been growing sunflowers since then, mostly in Holland, Germany, and France. Sunflowers are cultivated nowadays to make Sunflower butter (a peanut butter alternative), and it is mixed with rye to make a delicious Sunflower bread, bird food, salad mixings, etc. The Sunflower oil, which is taken from the ripe seeds is used commonly for cooking and also used as a cheaper biodiesel. Sunflowers also produce latex

Global Warming And Corporate Social Responsibility Engineering Essay

Corporate Social Responsibility is the uninterrupted committedness by concern to act ethically and lend to economic development while still assisting the quality of life of their milieus such as the local community and the society. ( Mallen Baker, Business Respect, [ Online ] , Avaliable: hypertext transfer protocol: //www.mallenbaker.net/csr/definition.php [ 2010 ] ) This essay will discourse the general background of British Airways company and the state of affairs, cardinal facts, the stakeholders and their engagement and the ethical issues that has arised in the last five old ages. Alternate solutions, rating and decision will besides be discussed on the concluding portion of the essay. A A A A A A A A A British Airways is one of the largest air hoses worldwide that provides conveyance to its riders by plane. British Airways ‘ mission is to give its riders the best possible service in their flight so that they will truly value their stay aboard the British Airways ‘ aircraft. ( Dr Paul Toyne, Dr Andrew Sentence, Article 13 and CBI – CSR Case Study Series, [ Online ] Avaliable at: hypertext transfer protocol: //www.article13.com/A13_ContentList.asp? strAction=GetPublicationHYPERLINK â€Å" hypertext transfer protocol: //owa.exeter.ac.uk/owa/kcjt201 @ isad.isadroot.ex.ac.uk/redir.aspx? Climate alteration is arised as a immense issue in the 1990 ‘s. Carbon dioxide emanations are a nursery gas that lead to pollution which contribute to what is known as the â€Å" nursery consequence † or planetary heating. ( founded by Arrhenius and Callendar ) It besides comes from waste mopess when the gases can non allow the Sun ‘s energy radiate it back into the infinite. Each clip a plane takes off, fuel is burned breathing C dioxide ( C02 ) into the ambiance which contributes to the â€Å" nursery consequence † . The air hose industry has â€Å" a diverse and by and large unsatisfactory attitude † to carbon offsetting, a study from MPs says today. ( Peter Woodman, The Independent, PA Transport Correspondent [ Online ] Available: hypertext transfer protocol: //www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/mps-attack-british-airways-for-risible-attitude-to-carbon-offsetting-458386.html [ Monday, 23 July 2007 ] ) The harm done to the Earth ‘s ambiance is increasing and planning and action must be taken to forestall this. A major stakeholder in the company is the directors. The directors in British Airways took the action to fall in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( UNFCCC ) and besides participated in the Kyoto Protocol to assist the nursery consequence job. In a meeting in Copenhagen, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has told the air hose industry ( including British Airways ) to better its C efficiency by an mean 1.5 % per twelvemonth from 2005 to 2010 and by maintaining the marks of this growing yearly. Besides, the UNFCCC wants to see a 50 % decrease in C emanations from 2005 and 2050. ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change web site, [ Online ] , Avaliable: hypertext transfer protocol: //unfccc.int/2860.php ) and ( Giovanni Bisignani, IATA ‘s Director General and CEO, BioAge Group, [ Online ] , Avaliable at: h ypertext transfer protocol: //www.greencarcongress.com/2009/09/iata-20090923.html [ 2010 ] ) The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change gathers and portions information with each other about C dioxide emanations, make up one's minding on what methods are best to manage it and keep a good environment for the society. It launches national schemes and spreads them to each other within the convention to cover with the clime alteration. British Air passages joined the Kyoto Protocol and by making this, they agreed to cut down their emanations by 5 % by 2010 compared to the degrees of 1990. The UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol helps come up with schemes to assist BA ( British Airways ) solve the planetary heating job in an efficient mode. In the Kyoto Protocol, there are two undertaking mechanisms. First, the Joint Implementation ( JI ) allows industrialised states to co-operate with the developing states to transport out undertakings. This allows British Air passages to acquire aid by fall ining the Kyoto Protocol. Second, the Clean Development Mechanism ( CDM ) invol ves investing in undertakings to cut down C dioxide emanations. Huge Numberss of undertakings are supported by investings by the CDM including the CDM grapevine undertaking where immense Numberss of C dioxide emanations have been delivered off from the United Kingdom. British Airways ‘ actions to cut down C dioxide emanations are monitored and precise records are kept by the Protocol and experts squads are hired to reexamine these records. If the nursery consequence is non dealt with, H2O degrees could lift taking to inundations on some locations destructing ecosystems and the alteration in clime could consequence people ‘s wellness worldwide for people who can non accommodate to it. ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change website [ Online ] Avaliable at: hypertext transfer protocol: //unfccc.int/kyoto_protocol/items/2830.php ) British Airways ‘ most of import stakeholder is its clients which are its riders. By making all this, appropriate action is taken by British Air passages to assist the life conditions of its riders. By taking action, British Airways promotes a good image for the company go forthing its clients with positive feedback. This will do it ‘s riders continue in buying the services of the concern as the concern shows good ethical behavior and shows that it is a corporate socially responsible concern. It besides shows that British Airways is a company willing and able to take the appropriate action to repair it ‘s jobs. The directors carried out studies and investigated that its employees have first-class client service. ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change website [ Online ] Avaliable at: hypertext transfer protocol: //unfccc.int/press/fact_sheets/items/4987.php ) The directors besides recruit CR ( corporate responsible ) experts and promote the employees to believe of their thoughts of their ain to assist with CR. The directors carried out a study in 2008 to oppugn its corporate duty. The response of this study led to the set up of the programme â€Å" One Finish † . The programme involves utilizing all the necessary agencies to cut down C dioxide emanations to forestall planetary heating and to keep a good corporate socially responsible position. However, even by making all this, BA was still left with unsatisfactory remarks that BA had merely purchased 1,600 metric tons of C beginnings which merely average to four return flights to New York. Global heating has to be dealt with, it leads to many jobs. ( Peter Woodman, The Independent, PA Transport Correspondent [ Online ] Available: hypertext transfer protocol: //www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/mps-attack-british-airways-for-risible-attitude-to-carbon-offsetting-458386.html [ Monday, 23 July 2007 ] ) It increases the temperature ensuing in the expansion of glacial lakes which could take to inundations. It besides leads to land instability which could ensue in avalanches. Both of the se consequences destroys the ecosystems of the animate beings populating in those countries. If this job is non dealt with, the alteration in clime could consequence the people ‘s wellness who can non accommodate to it such as the young person and aged. Besides, planetary warming leads to extreme conditions events which increase the costs of the concern to accommodate to these conditions. ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change website [ Online ] Avaliable at: hypertext transfer protocol: //unfccc.int/press/fact_sheets/items/4987.php ) A A A A A A A A A A A A A British Airways volunteered to fall in the European Union Emission Trading Scheme. ( EU ETS ) The EU ETS proctors and takes record of all the big C dioxide emitters and let them to breathe to a certain bound of C dioxide. If a company exceeds its allowance it has to buy allowances from other companies in the EU ETS or cut down on how much they emit. This allows British Air passages to buy excess C dioxide emanations than the sum that they are allowed if they need to for their services to maintain their clients satisfied. This allows the company to run its flights and services as normally expeditiously, nevertheless, it could lend to planetary heating if it goes over their C dioxide allowances often. The programme allows British Air passages to run expeditiously while still taking action to cut down C dioxide emissions every bit much as possible. It has many ways to cut down its C dioxide emanations. British Airways was the first air hose to present a voluntary rider strategy and was besides the first air hose to win authorities blessing for it ‘s C countervailing actions. The voluntary rider strategy allowed riders on board flights to give payments to British Airways so that it could fund power workss and air current farms to cut down C dioxide emitted around the country. Deforestation increases the planetary C emanations by up to 25 % , which is a immense impact towards planetary heating. ( British Air passages, Up to day of the month article, [ Online ] Available: hypertext transfer protocol: //www.britishairways.com/travel/csr-climate-policy/public/en_gb ) British Airways is developing solutions with this programme to forestall deforestation taking to a better environment. Waste maneuvering groups have been recruited by the company to forestall waste excessively much extra waste to be deposited landfill countries which could besides take to carbon emanations. The company reduced that sum of paper by covering with it ‘s services electronically by electronic mail as possible and by altering its manuals, signifiers and studies to electronic agencies every bit much as possible. Overtime, British Airways waste issues decreased continuously. The company besides took reusing and recycling into history. Items that can be reused were donated to orphanhoods and furniture within offices and the aircraft were reused every bit much as possible. All the in-flight wastes were recycled and disposed of decently, which left some waste to be incinerated which avoids taking up landfill infinite. Besides, British Airways has decided to replace old theoretical account aircrafts to newer m ore environmentally friendly theoretical accounts cut downing emanations. All of these solutions of the programme are cost alot in finance but it will go forth its clients satisfied and will demo that it is a company willing to take action with good ethical beliefs leting it to maximize its net incomes in the hereafter without any jobs. It besides shows that it is a corporate socially responsible concern by stand foring itself in the EU ETS. However, one should believe that, the company should hold focused more on the attempts on the programme â€Å" One Finish † as that showed more positive consequences. British Airways handled the state of affairs expeditiously and smartly set uping the clime alteration programme, â€Å" One Finish † . The decrease of emanations and energy usage was needed to protect the people for what was known as the â€Å" nursery consequence † . Privacy and Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Privacy and Security - Essay Example The leaked documents revealed operational details of a global surveillance apparatus run by the NSA and other members of the Five Eyes alliance, along with numerous commercial and international partners.[3]The public and government officials are divided on the rightness and legality of these programs, but President Barack Obama defends their constitutionality, urgency, and effectiveness as he believes in the tradeoffs between security and privacy. Other commentators claim that privacy should not be traded off in any way for better security. It is argued that the need for security is not threatening Americans’ right to privacy because the state is balancing them in the best way possible. The need for security is paramount, however, and should override privacy concerns because it only preserves public safety by reasonable authority, surveillance, and approval of Congress, some politicians, and courts. The need for security is not threatening Americans’ right to privacy because the state is doing its best to balance both interests. First, President Obama himself assured the public that it is not listening into every call that Americans make. Wiretapping and listening to other data can be considered as a â€Å"search† that can breach the Fourth Amendment, but this is not what the government is doing. Instead, the government is only studying data trends. Lara Jakes and Darlene Superville report on the specific procedures of the government, clarifying that the program does not include listening into calls, but only monitoring the origin and duration of calls. This means that the government is not fully breaching privacy rights. The article no longer explained though how data trends and call location can identify suspicious activities. Jakes and Superville add that if there are specific numbers that are perceived as suspicious of terrorist intentions, intelligence offici als â€Å"must return to court to get approval† before

Teams engage constructively to evolve a common strategy towards fulfilling organizational responsibilities. In an age when organizations look towards improving the team work amongst employees, the need to coordinate and lead such teams becomes an investible necessity. Moreover, organizations and business cultures are driven by change where there is a constant effort towards improvement and the thrust towards better techniques of management. The advent of globalization and the subsequent rise is competition for limited resources is further forcing individuals to develop skills to resolve conflicts and evolve skills that can resolve any discrepancies in a qualitative manner (Kenneth Clark, 1996). All these aspects are traits of successful leadership. There are several methods to foster and nurture leadership and managerial skills within a work culture. Some organizations look towards developing leadership as an inclusive and internal process. In fact, it is often believed that the key factor to win in a competitive market it to enable the creation of able leaders. Organizations that span across countries and cultures cannot thrive without developing leaders within their organization, which is achieved by providing the qualified ones with the right opportunities to develop such management skills that can take on added responsibility, make them feel pride in facing new challenges and providing them the requisite resources that can help them overcome all such challenges in a satisfactory manner (Martin Simons, 2003). However, in the midst of this struggle within organizations to find the best fit for developing their next generation of leaders, a number of questions need to be answered. Companies are interested in understanding the

Food safety Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Food safety Assignment - Essay Example According to Paster (2007), â€Å"HACCP is a system composed of seven principles that are meant to be applied to a written food safety program focusing on the food in your operation† (p. vii). There are five star points that make up the basic system: pre-requisite programs (master), food defense (apply), principles 1 and 2 (hazard analysis and determine CCP, principles 3, 4, and 5 (critical limits, monitoring, and corrective actions), principles 6 and 7 (verify and record keeping). Certification is required in an education of the system and it expires every four years, thus it is important to keep up certification requirements as they need they need to be renewed (Paster, 2007). The first reason it is implemented is because it is a requirement in the food service and preparation industry. Without having someone certified for HACCP, a restaurant cannot legally operate. The primary social reason for having HACCP systems in a food preparation and service establishment, however, is so that the public safety has been protected. This system is designed to optimize systems so that prevention of food contamination is of primary concern. The major reasons can be listed as follows: management of product safety, prevention of product safety incidents, limitations of traditional quality control, external pressures, foundation for the development of effective product management systems (Mortimore & Wallace, 1998). According to Tucker (2007), â€Å"(HACCP) needs to be supported by prerequisite programs and be part of a broader food safety management system† (p. 41). Tucker (2007) states that the World Health Organization identifies prerequisites as â€Å"Practices and conditions needed prior to and during the implementation of HACCP and which are essential for food safety† (p. 41). The different types of prerequisites carry a wide scope of functions, which include: hygiene

Multicultural Education Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Multicultural Education - Coursework Example Creating a multicultural environment requires one to be non-judgmental and open. It is important that teachers act genuinely among diverse students. Classes have students with different experiences from all over the world, some good and some traumatizing. A number of students are refugees of different ethnic backgrounds running from war-torn countries. Some students may be poor and others from extremely wealthy families (Banks & Banks, 2010, p.49). Teachers should, therefore, respect students for who they are and accommodate their thoughts and concerns. Multicultural classrooms have children from different linguistic background. To have a better understanding of their students, teachers need to research the native backgrounds of these students. They should embrace the language differences since it gives them an insight into their customs and behavior. Schools should have multicultural libraries no matter the subjects taught. Having a variety of books from multicultural authors excites an ordinary classroom (Wayne, 2009, p. 34). Perhaps the most exciting way of creating a multi-cultural environment is celebrating cultural differences among students. Schools can accomplish this through simple events such as food fairs highlighting different cultures and cultural music. As countries continue to exhibit great diversity in classes, must teachers and students to understand and accept differences among people. There is, therefore, a significant challenge among educators to develop an effective multicultural education curriculum through which all students can learn happily with each

Diary for one class-------- I will upload every think that you will Essay

Diary for one class-------- I will upload every think that you will need. You have to read the slides when it is need it and you - Essay Example 2. Health Illiteracy – Even if Maria’s children can get medical treatment, the disease have a possibility of recurrence because she is not aware on what causes the disease. Also, she needs to learn more about basics of health as well as family planning. The 4ps are product, price, place and promotion. For product, the information that Maria needs is birth-control methods and hygiene. She also needs to be counseled regarding her perspective towards traditional healing and the risks. The price denotes that Maria must change her perspectives so she could address the health issues objectively and effectively. For example, the price of not using birth control could mean more mouths to feed. As for the place, the only channel for educating her at the moment is through home visits by a health care provider. Lastly, promotion can be accomplished by suggesting birth control products through some brochures and samples like oral contraceptives. As for her children, Maria can be gi ven oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration during diarrhea. In the end, the main objective is for Maria to take initiative in visiting the health facility on a regular basis. A sterling example of corporate social responsibility was exemplified by IBM way ahead of other companies. It was also interesting that IBM initiated CSR at the time that it almost fell into bankruptcy if not for the leadership of Louis Gertsner. During that time that Louis Gerstner ruled IBM, social responsibility then was a concept that was uncommonly practiced by organizations. IBM was influenced by Gertner’s social responsibility advocacy by erasing the barriers between class and gender within the organization which is a higher form of social responsibility. Unlike other organizations, that donated for a cause or planted a tree, Gerstner made something unique. Gerstner established a diversity task force that addressed to diversity issues. In line with that, he also co-chaired Achieve, an organ ization that focuses on improving the academic standards for public school in the U.S. In fact, he really supported quality education alongside being the CEO of IBM. He established Reinventing Education, an educational partnership with a number of states and school districts, enabling them to benefit from IBM technology, and technical assistance. Social responsibility was then a concern for Gerstner even during his IBM days. In a speech addressed to Comdex, he already made mention of how technology and social responsibility go hand in hand, to wit: I think we will make our visions reality. I think that as stewards of our industry, we will step up to the challenges of social responsibility. We will improve the world, and the way we work, the way we communicate, live and learn as people.  (1995, Transcript of Louis Gestner speech at Comdex) There are abundant examples of corporate social responsibility shown by large corporations. Just recently, Coca Cola pledged 2.5 Billion Yen ($3 1 Million dollars) to Japan so the country can recover from the disasters that happened. The pledge goes to a reconstruction fund which includes free dispensing of beverages for the victims. References CSR Press Release. Personal Statements Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Statements - Personal Statement Example In flight instruction, where evaluating and documenting risk can be real time or anticipated for the future, my ability to recognize and evaluate the risk at every conceivable instant allows me to complete each flight safely; in flight instruction, there is no room for errors. In real time, I evaluate and identify risks from the pre-flight briefing through the post-flight briefing of every lesson. By documenting the flight lesson in the student’s records, I anticipate potential risks that must be addressed until I am satisfied that the risk can be managed and mitigated by the student when I no longer unsupervised their development and risk management. This is a complicated process that requires I document flight lessons in both my and the student’s records to pinpoint dysfunctions and areas that require further evaluation and improvement. The goal that is achieved provides a viewfinder for identifying, and eliminating risk within program parameters. I also managed risk while flying freight. One risk that constantly required monitoring was icing potential. I would perform a pre-flight evaluation to review the route of flight. I would evaluate the weather using documented and approved sources, and I would evaluate the potential for icing. I would assess the type of aircraft required for the flight and based on these risk evaluations request the appropriate aircraft to control the risk. Simply stated, if I was going into icing, I would demand an aircraft useable for known icing. If the appropriate aircraft was not available, I would explain the risk involved with the flight, provide the information I had obtained while assessing the risk and explain how that risk would be mitigated by using appropriate equipment. I was never denied an aircraft after explaining my documented, risk-assessment evaluation. 2. In this text area, please provide a brief explanation of your

Role of Technology in Citizens' Social and Economic Development Coursework

Role of Technology in Citizens' Social and Economic Development - Coursework Example Many voluntary organizations have initiated numerous technological projects in rural areas to help improve the living standards of those in rural areas. The result is an increased penetration of technology in these areas. Technology has made tremendous impacts among the rural population, making work easier and improving living standards in many fronts, and despite the deterioration of societal values associated with it, it should be promoted. The penetration of technology in rural areas has come as good news to many rural dwellers. The positive aspects of this penetration are evident. The most conspicuous aspect is the increase in production. Clearly, economies, which have embraced technology, have registered improved productivity. For instance, in the agricultural sector, the use of modern farming techniques and tools has significantly improved the level of output. As opposed to traditional farming practices such as the use of simple tools like hoes, use of tractors, fertilizers, and irrigation have had a tremendous impact on food production, almost assuring food security despite the high population in the society. In offices, automation has played a pivotal role in increased yields (Raj, 2005). Previous manual operations, which consumed a lot of time, have been automated. The emergence of ATMs in the banking sector has allowed clients to transact easily and within less time.Additionally, technology has incorporated rural areas in the global village. Through globalization, the world has become â€Å"one big village† where information is passed and shared almost instantly. Technological inventions continue to reduce the distance between people. The use of emails, social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, phones, tablets, and fax has allowed people to keep in touch as if they are in the same geographical location. News spread faster because of technology. Ideally, it is honest to say that one can make a trip to the entire globe from a remote village withi n seconds courtesy of technology.

Software for Human Services Organization Essay Example for Free

Software for Human Services Organization Essay Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services is an organization that services the mental health population. This population has continued to grow, and because of the increased turnaround in clients served the company had to invest in multiple software products. Electronic Health Record or (EHR) is one of the software programs that are used by Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services. This software is designed to be shared with several different health care providers or settings. The Electronic Health Record software is an electronic collection of systematic health information about a certain population or client. Using Electronic Health Record software will be the digital backup version for a client’s paper chart. Electronic Health Record systems are client centered records that are recorded in real-time. Authorized users of this system are able to obtain this secure information instantly. Using the Electronic Health Record software client’s medical, mental, and treatment records are tracked faster. This program was designed to go further than the normal intake data that is gathered in a provider’s office and is inclusive of a larger view of a client’s care. Electronic Health Record software has tools that will allow providers to make accurate decisions pertaining to client’s mental health care. Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services use Electronic Health Record software to streamline and automate the workflow for different providers. One of the benefits of Electronic Health Record software is that Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services authorized employees has easier access to client’s medical history. This history consist of radiology images, diagnoses, treatment plans, allergies, results from a test that was taken, immunization records, medications, and laboratory results. Using this software to centralize client’s records electronically has helped the communication between other agencies flow smoothly. Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services use Electronic Health Records software to track information from  other organization, non-profit agencies, and other human services provider who may have provided services to a client. Some of these services are Medicaid approval or reimbursement, clinic management, subsidized housing, drug rehabilitation, and section eight housing. An advantage of this software is the improvement of client’s care, efficiency, safety, client-centeredness, and equity. This software allows each clinician involved in the client’s care the ability to share and obtain the client’s medical history and other pertinent information with other medical providers. Pharmacies, medical imaging facilities, schools, emergency facilities, and other clinics are a few providers that are authorized to receive client’s information from Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services in a digital format. As more and more health care providers continue to migrate to digital electronic management because of the advantages, there are some disadvantages to using Electronic Health Records software. One of the disadvantages can be the initial start-up cost may become pricey in the beginning. This consists of hardware installations, training of staff, and software upgrades. It does not matter if the facility that is converting to digital Electronic Health Records is large or small the start-up cost will be expensive. If administrative staff, nurses, and doctors are not too familiar with the way the new system is operated, these individuals will waste more time trying to figure it out. This can sometime force the administrative staff, nurses, and doctors that are uncomfortable with this software take longer to master a task, this is wasted time that could be used for other important missions or serving clients. Another downfall or disadvantage of using this software is the concerns of client ’s security. Most individuals think a disadvantage would be the security vulnerability for the client’s medical records. The ultimate concern is that hackers are still out there and may steal client’s personal information and possible compromise their identity. It does not matter how many password encryptions, security features added, and firewalls are put up, hackers can get in there. However, there are also companies that specialize in security measures for the maintenance of Electronic Health Records software. Client Track software is another software that is used at Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Service. Several of Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Service case managers, social workers, and other field professionals have  their mobile device set up so that they can have full access to enter the client’s chart and work on it without having to be at work. Client Track is optimized to be compatible with mobile Firefox, Apple iPad, iPhone, Chrome, Safari Web Brower, and iPod touch. Client Track has allowed Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services to take providing services t o a whole new level. Client Track has made it possible for employees to input important case notes in the client charts while they are continuing to work in the field. Different facilities can expedite the check in the process of a client by incorporating other mobile devices and iPads. This software will only allow designated staff to access areas pertaining to their job title. Client Track software has been an asset and benefit to Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health. The collaboration, compliance, efficiency, and outcomes have shown to be another benefit of using Client Track. Other communities, agencies and multiple programs can collaborate and transfer client’s information amongst each other securely and smoothly. Most agencies and programs have stakeholders, which they are required to report outcomes, activities, and services rendered, Client Track provide an automatic update with this information, which can be obtained by the stakeholders on an as needed basis. The efficiency of Client Track will eliminate having to use spreadsheets and give more time for staff to help the clients that are in need. Since Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services have been using Client Track software, the service to client’s outcome has increased. One of the advantages of using Client Track software is that this software is configured to meet various types of software. Homeless Management Information System or (HMIS) is a software application that is used daily by human service workers nationwide. Individual’s would think that an organization the size of Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Service will be the determining factor of the software chosen, this company has chosen the software that is a better fit, which allows them to communicate with several agencies. A possible challenge that may be encountered from the implementation process is the difficulty comparing the associated health IT products and EHRs products. Because of the newness of this software there were not a lot of competitors to compare to. References Gungor, F. (2014). OneSource DocumentManagement. Legal Environment Of Colombia Politics Essay

Legal Environment Of Colombia Politics Essay History Colombia is one of three countries that emerged following the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830. Francisco de Paula Santander became the president of the new state. Colombias name has changed many times since its independence from Gran Colombia, starting with the Republic of New Granada, then the Granadine Confederation, then the United States of Colombia, and finally the current Republic of Colombia. Colombias history is filled with violent conflicts between the conservative and liberal political parties. The most notable of these conflicts was a civil war occurring between 1899 and 1903, known as The War of a Thousand Days. The war led to approximately 100,000 deaths. Colombia also lost part of its northern territory in the conflict, which ultimately became what is currently Panama. Tension increased and conflict continued through 1958. From 1948 to 1957, Colombia experienced its worst political conflicts it what is now coined la violencia. The violence began after the assassination of the liberal leader, Jorge Elià ©cer Gaità ¡n. It is estimated this turmoil resulted in at least 200,000 deaths. During this period, Colombia was ruled by two successive dictators, Laureano Gà ³mez and Gustavo Rojas Pinalla. The conflicts and violence finally ended with an agreement between the conservatives and liberals in 1958. They formed a coalition government, known as the National Front government. The idea behind this type of government was that each party would hold the presidency and all other government and civil positions on an equal, rotating basis. This lasted for sixteen years and let to better economic conditions. Beginning in 1974, Colombia began to have legitimate elections between the two political parties. While political violence declined as a result of these elections, Colombia has been plagued with other issues. In 1985 a dormant volcano erupted outside of Bogotà ¡ killing nearly 20,000 people in the town of Armero. In 1999, another volcano resulted in significant loss of life in the town of Armenia. In addition to these natural disasters, Colombia was plagued by increased terrorist and drug activity. The Minister of Justice was assassinated in 1984 by drug barons working to protect the extremely profitable drug trade. Less than a year later, Guerrillas raided the Palace of Justice in Bogotà ¡ in 1985 taking a number of hostages until the Colombian troops stormed in. The incident resulted in nearly 100 deaths including several Supreme Court judges. The Marxist guerrillas terrorist activities still continue and have gained in strength since they partnered with the drug cartels for weapons. These guerrillas, known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), reside in the south part of the country and have approximately 20,000 members. From this remote region, the guerrillas plan attacks on the Colombian military and police and protect their cocaine plantations. The estimated number of deaths in the 1990s from this conflict is 35,000 and has resulted in a number of military personnel being held hostage. Andrà ©s Pastrana became President in 1998 and unveiled a plan to combat the violence and drug problems, known as Plan Colombia. The goals of the plan were to increase peace throughout the country, combat the drug industry, revive the economy, improve protection of human rights, and reduce social inequalities. The United States provided a $1.3 billion assistance package mostly to help build-up the military and counternarcotics initiatives. In 2002, à lvaro Uribe was elected President and released the Democratic Security and Defense Policy. This plan focused attention on the security and military components of Colombia, but also worked to improve the social and economic issues. Uribe was reelected in 2006. (Gascoigne, 2001) Most recently, in June 2010 Juan Manuel Santos Calderà ³n was elected President of Colombia. (President of Colombia, 2010) He is believed to want to continue Uribes market-based economic reforms. (The world in figures: Countries, 2010) Background Facts All facts and statistics below were taken from the CIA World Factbook, unless indicated otherwise. (The World Factbook, 2010) Colombia is located in South America. It is over 1 million square kilometers, which is slightly less than twice the size of Texas, ranking it 26th in the world in terms of size. The major natural resources of Colombia are petroleum, natural gas, coal, and other minerals. Current issues facing the Colombian environment are deforestation, soil and water damage from the overuse of pesticides, and air pollution. The population of Colombia as of July 2010 was 44,205,293, with an annual growth rate of approximately 1.184 percent. A majority of this population is between 15 and 64 years old (66 percent), a relatively smaller percentage is under 14 (28 percent), and even smaller still is the percentage of the population over 65 years old (6 percent). Just about two-thirds of the population lives in urban areas. An indicator of social and economic conditions in the country, the infant mortality rate is 16.97 deaths per 1,000 live births and the life expectancy at birth is 74. Only about 170,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, constituting only .6 percent of the population. The official language of Colombia is Spanish. The dominant religion is Roman Catholic at about 90 percent of the population. The government spends approximately 3.9 percent of GDP on educational expenditures, ranking 111 in the world. Over 90 percent of the population over the age of 15 is literate and students are expected to remain in school on average for 13 years. These statistics indicate a successful educational system. Military service is required of 18-24 year olds for 18 months. The military expenditures are 3.4 percent of GDP, ranking 35th in the world. Colombia ranks first in murders per capita in the world. (Crime Statistics) Predominant Economic Model The predominant economic model in Colombia is a market-based mixed economy. (Financial Standards Foundation, 2009) Both privately owned enterprises and the government play an important role. The market-based aspect of their economy focuses on private businesses producing goods and services and individuals consuming those goods and services. Ownership rights are important in protecting the private enterprises from governmental power. The economy is believed to be more efficient in a market economy as supply and demand are used to determine the production and pricing of goods and services. The mixed economy aspect means Colombia allows certain limitations to be placed on free enterprise through government regulations. Some services are better provided by the government than through a free market system. (U.S. Department of State) In 2005, over half of the total investment in Colombia was from government enterprises and government investments. This leans Colombia to more of a mixed economy. A process of economic liberalization was started in 1990 by removing restrictions on imports and foreign investment, privatizing more services, and easing government regulations. More recent reports show the liberalization is effective. The 2008 index of Economic Freedom reported the Colombian governments total expenditures were only 31 percent of gross domestic product. (Financial Standards Foundation, 2009) The National Administrative Department of Statistics states that the Colombian gross domestic product growth rates were approximately 7 percent in 2006 and 8 percent in 2007. The U.S. State Department reports there are a few factors that are contributing to the stable growth in Colombia: an increase in domestic security, monetary policy that maintains low inflation and a stable exchange rate, a rise in petroleum prices and exports in response to their economic liberalization, and various trade agreements. In 2008, the growth rate fell mostly due to a worldwide economic downturn, continuing to decline to 2.4 percent in 2010. (Financial Standards Foundation, 2009) Of some concern to the International Monetary Fund is the large deficit Colombia faces. The deficit is mostly financed by foreign investment, which can be risky due to an uncertain international economic environment. (Financial Standards Foundation, 2009) In summary, the Colombian economy exhibits characteristics of both a market-based economy and a mixed economy. The economic liberalization effort has already and will continue to move Colombia more toward a market-based economy that features less government regulation and a greater focus on privatization and international trade and investment. Legal Environment The Colombian government is made up a three branch system, similar to that in the United States. It consists of an executive branch, headed by the President, a judicial branch, and a legislative branch, consisting of a bicameral Congress. (The World Factbook, 2010) A new constitution was ratified in 1991 and brought about major changes in the political institutions. The new constitution maintained the three-branch system of government. It created new positions such as the Inspector General, a Human Rights Ombudsman, a Constitutional Court, a Superior Judicial Council, and Vice President. Significant social changes were implemented such as civil divorce, dual nationality and most importantly a legal means to appeal government decisions affecting constitutional rights. The constitution also implemented an accusatory system of criminal justice. Finally, an amendment in 2005 allows presidents to hold two consecutive four year terms, as opposed to just one. (Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, 2010) The Index of Economic Freedom measures the property rights index. The index measures the degree to which private property rights are protected by a countrys laws. It also indicates the likelihood private property will be seized by the government, how independent the judiciary is, and the enforceability of contracts. Scores range from 0 to 100, where higher scores indicate a better protection of property rights. Colombia scored a 50. (Property Rights Index, 2010) The constitution explicitly protects private property and contracts are generally enforced. Compensation is required in expropriation cases. Intellectual property rights are not always guaranteed. There are commonly infringements on intellectual property, especially trademarks. In terrorist territories property rights are not guaranteed. (Heritage Foundation, 2010) Corruption is a significant problem in Colombia. There are concerns about the influence of criminal organizations on the police, military and other judicial services. (Heritage Foundation, 2010) Drug trafficking and terrorist activity is still a major issue in Colombia. With the assistance of the United States, Colombia has been able to weaken the drug trafficking organizations, reduce the supply of drugs to the United States, and establish a military presence in conflict regions. The involvement of terrorist groups in drug trafficking increases the difficulty of cutting down the problem. With the help of the United States alternative development programs have cultivated over 650,000 hectares of agricultural and forestry lands. Colombia has instituted social infrastructure projects to entice communities to remain illicit-crop free. (Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, 2010)

Those Winter Sundays Analysis

Those Winter Sundays Analysis The poem, which I selected for analyzing and interpreting, is Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden. The question raised by the author has been attracting the readers for a long time, since it deals with a situation which most of people have experienced at least once in their lives. The authors language and artistic devices by which he transmits the idea that people often pay little attention to good deeds and kind attitude especially when they has become a part of somebodys routine leave a really strong impression, often making the reader stop and re-think his attitude towards some events in his or her life. In this poem the author recollects memories from his childhood, when his father rose before dawn to kindle the fire in order to warm their hose on winter morning. Hayden skillfully uses deep and powerful imagery to convey his emotions, not giving direct statements but letting the reader to surmise what was implied in the lines therefore making a bright and living picture of that event in his or her mind. Those Winter Sundays honors a much-criticized figure in American culture of the 1990s the withdrawn, emotionally inexpressive and distant (and probably unhappy and angry) father. The poem makes its way towards perceiving the emotional life of such a man. The poem realizes love as it lived in such a man (Goldstein and Chrisman 254). Beginning with the phrase Sundays too my father got up early the author indicates that his father got up early not only on Sundays, but during the whole week also, thus giving the image of a hard-working man, who though having a day off gives up his opportunity to have a rest for the sake of his family. Hayden also emphasizes that the man has got cracked hands that ached from labour in the weekday, making the reader to feel a little more drama and sympathy for his father. Te author sums up the first stanza with a simple literal line No one ever thanked him, therefore accomplishing splendidly his image of a caring man who shows a real regard for his family every day, but no one appreciates that. In the second stanza the speaker describes what he did, while his father performed his morning routine. The reader sees a little boy lying in his bed, reluctant to get up and waiting for the cold to stand away. The second line here also gives an important detail: When the rooms were warm hed call, one more time showing the fathers regard for the boy. However, the last line of this stanza may seem a bit puzzling: Fearing the chronic angers of that house. Such a phrase may imply various meanings. Without knowing the background of this verse it is hard to judge about what the author meant by these words. Of course there is a possibility that chronic angers relate to the house itself and living in poverty the boy does not love his home. But knowing the authors biography, especially the facts about his living in the atmosphere of fights and quarrels in the foster family, one can rather incline to the thought that the boy neither liked his house nor his father, therefore never noticing goo d qualities of his foster parent and care towards him even when they were displayed. In the third stanza Hayden refers to one more sign of regard from his father and polished my good shoes as well. Along with that he gives his own respond to such situation: Speaking indifferently to him, thus admitting ungrateful ignorance from his own side. In the final lines of the third stanza the speaker asks a rhetorical question: What did I know, what did I know/of loves austere and lonely offices? Hayden indicates that being a child he did not understand love often rather expresses itself indirectly, through help and care hidden in actions rather than through any kind of demonstrative expression such as words or embraces, which are commonly considered to be a real sign of love and care. One may suppose, that in his childhood, being a bit more selfish than now, like all children do and having little experience the speaker felt only negative energy that belonged to the house and paid no attention to his fathers effort to warm the house and polish the boys shoes. What is more the last two lines of the poem may also explain that the boys childhood was rather unhappy anyway, that is why he did not know much about love and was not able to appreciate it discerning it in his fathers routine. Containing traditional fourteen lines, this verse is an example of a sonnet, though the lines lack a reliable rhythm. There still are some rhymes and near-rhymes but no rhyme scheme. Though one should not omit that fact that the sonnet was written at the time when free verse was really popular in the Anglo-American literature. A kind of hidden alliteration is also implied by Hayden, such as the k sounds in the words ached, cracked, blueback and so on. In some way it adds elements of pain to the general atmosphere of the verse, especially if one takes the phrase cracked hands that ached. Gradually, the k sounds are replaced by the o sounds, like in the words good, shoes, know, love, offices etc. These drawling sounds evoke associations with love and loneliness. Therefore, along with the impression which the reader gained from the poem by reading the speakers narration of the event, the reader also perceives the same story by sonic means. The noise of this poem moves us through its emot ional journey from discomfort to lonely life (Goldstein and Chrisman 252). The author establishes a pensive and regretful tone almost from the very beginning. Even the heading Those Winter Sundays evokes an image of cold and often cloudy days, therefore producing a feeling of sadness and melancholy. Hayden introduces cold and uncomfortable images, like blueback cold to strengthen the picture of undesirable conditions of the unheated house. Hayden aids the initial tone of regret by sharing with the reader an image of the fathers cracked hands. All these means help the reader to realize clearly the main idea of the poem. The poems thesis is that the office of love can be relentless, thankless, and more than a little mysterious (Goldstein and Chrisman 252). All in all, this sonnet leaves a deep impression and induces to re-think the way in which we treat sometimes people who care for us. Therefore, one can learn a good lesson from it: there are times when a person simply does not see the love expressed indirectly, thus staying indifferent and ungrateful towards the person who does have a regard for him or her.

The Epistemology of Hegels Introduction to the Phenomenology of Spirit

The Epistemology of Hegel's Introduction to the Phenomenology of Spirit In his Phenomenology of Spirit, G.W.F. Hegel lays out a process by which one may come to know absolute truth. This process shows a gradual evolution from a state of "natural consciousness" (56) (1) to one of complete self-consciousness - which leads to an understanding of the "nature of absolute knowledge itself" (66). By understanding the relation between consciousness and truth, one may come to know the true nature of our existence. Hegel proposes to answer these questions in one bold stroke; he relates them in such a way as to make an infinitely complex and indiscernible universe a unitary whole. This process from a natural state to a kind of transcendence leads one from the chaos of the immediate to the sublimity of the universal. Consciousness begins as what Hegel calls "a natural consciousness" (56). That which is known to this consciousness "will prove to be knowledge only in conception, not in reality" (56). This kind of consciousness assumes knowledge of reality that is often refuted. Hegel says, "since natural consciousness does forthwith think it really knows, it views its own experiential course in a negative light, taking the very realization of its conception to be instead its own loss" (57), demonstrating the frailty of this method of thought. To respond to this shortcoming of consciousness, some might attempt to find an absolute absolved from one-sidedness, from sheer relativity to the knowing subject. Others will not respond this way, however, instead spinning off into apathy, subjectivism, or nihilism (59). Those who do attempt to find an objective truth most often turn to science. Some have suggested that the intellect is an ... ...s to relate to that reality at all. Thus as one comes to be fully aware of consciousness, one becomes fully aware of absolute reality. Hegel describes a way by which one may come to know absolute truth. This process shows a transition from a state of "natural consciousness" (56) to one of complete self-consciousness - which leads to an understanding of the "nature of absolute knowledge itself" (66). By understanding the relation between consciousness and truth, one may come to know the true nature of our existence. Thus, Hegel answers these questions in one bold stroke; he relates them in such a way as to make an infinitely complex and indiscernible universe a unitary whole. This whole is not only total self-consciousness, but also total awareness of absolute reality. 1. * Page References are to the unpublished translation by Peter Fuss and John Dobbins.

Character, Morals, Integrity Essay -- Values Argumentative Essays

Character, Morals, Integrity Morals, character, integrity, what do these words mean†¦.actually, the question is, do you have them. A man named Dwight Moody once said, â€Å"Character is what you are in the dark.† You cannot see your morals, character, or integrity, these are only shown as your values. Someone could only show their own values, which are very important to themselves and everyone else. Integrity is the firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. The way you show your integrity, character, and morals or how they are effect you in either a negative or positive way. There are many causes to how your values are. So as you know, integrity is very important and it is important to have it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First of all, people may ask, â€Å"What are morals, character, and integrity,† but they should know that they are mainly the same thing. Character means moral or ethical strength, or as H. Jackson Browne once said, â€Å"Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking.† John Wooden said that everyone should, â€Å"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.† Morals are rules or habits of conduct with reference of standards of right and wrong. Socrates once said, â€Å"Moral philosophy is hard thought about right action.† Paul Tillich stated that, â€Å"Morality is not a subject, it is a life put to the test in dozens of moments.† Integrity is the...

The Linguistic Situation of South Africa :: essays research papers fc

When it comes to linguistics, South Africa is like a melting pot of languages. In total, South Africa has eleven major languages coming from both Africa and Europe. The major languages used are Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Pedi, Sesotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. In order to understand how each of these languages arrived in South Africa, we must first look at the history of people living in the country. The first identified language spoken in the South Africa was Khoisan. This language was spoken by the indigenous people of South Africa, the Khoikhio, who lived mainly in the southern coastal regions of the country. Over the years this language has slowly faded away along with the native Khoikhio people. Today there are only a few native South Africans left who can still speak Khoisan living in the western sections of the country.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Some time around the eighth century many Bantu tribes migrated south from central Africa into the northern territories of South Africa. Each of these Bantu tribes brought with them their own distinct Bantu language—nine of which still remain and are recognized today as official languages by the South African Government. These languages are used throughout the African population, which makes up three quarters of South Africa’s people. These languages include: Sesotho, Tsonga, Pedi, Tswana, Venda; and the Nguni group of Bantu languages: Xhosa, Ndebele, Swazi, and Zulu.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the present, Zulu is the Bantu language with the largest number of speakers. In KwaZulu and Natal there are nine million people that speak this language. Falling right behind with seven million speakers is the language of Xhosa. Xhosa can be found around Transei, Ciskei, and on the Eastern Cape. The official language of Swaziland is Swazi with two million speakers. The last Nguni language is Ndebele, which is spoken by half a million people in some northeastern parts of South Africa. Between the four separate Nguni languages there are 12 different dialects. Pedi and Sesotho are both a part of the Sotho group of Bantu Languages and they share 11 different dialects. Pedi is the strongest language in the Sotho group. Pedi has four million speakers all over the country. Three million people in Qwaqwa and Orange Free State speak Sesotho. Tsonga, which has four dialects, has four million speakers living in Mozambique and Swaziland. Tswana spoken in Botswana has aroun d three million speakers. Venda, spoken mainly in Transvaal, has over half a million speakers.

McCarthyism and the Crucible Essay

Throughout history there have been many events that are direct parallels of each other. These parallels are evident in Joseph McCarthy’s, McCarthyism and in Arthur Miller’s, the Crucible. McCarthyism was the fear of communism that was created by the Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy. This was a time of fear after the Second World War in the years 1950 through 1954. McCarthy had conducted hearings accusing people who were suspected of being related to communism. During these hearings, he forced people to give up names of other â€Å"followers† and if they refused to give names of others, they were imprisoned. In Arthur Miller’s, the Crucible it was a based off the Salem Witch Trials. This era had the same tactics of dealing with the supposed followers as McCarthyism, but in this case it was for witchcraft. Many people were accused of witchcraft and put to death for being related to the accusations. The Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism were both examples o f false accusations and public hysteria. The Crucible and McCarthyism were both fueled by fear. In the onset of the Crucible, Abigail, a woman who was in love with John Proctor, began blaming people of being affiliated with witchcraft and communicating with the devil. She said, â€Å"She made me do it! She made Betty do it.. She makes me drink blood!† (Miller I.43). Abby had blamed Tituba about being a part of witchcraft and it soon lead to her death because she couldn’t plead innocent. During this time the courts would just blame you for being a part of witchcraft and it was almost impossible to prove your innocence. Abigail kept blaming people and soon created the fear in the town because they believe she would blame them next. Many people became very cautious of their actions in the town because they were afraid of being accused. McCarthyism was fueled by the fear of the communists taking over and a potential nuclear war. Joseph McCarthy installed this fear into everyone because neither he nor the United States knew who was a communist or not. There had been spies that snuck into the states. The trust of people was lost and everyone was  afraid of being accused themselves. In William Pfaffs, Revisionist View of McCarthyism Misses the Mark, he states, â€Å"McCarthyism was not about spies, it was about people who had been communist party members, or who had expresses pro-Communist or fellow traveling sympathies.† McCarthy had been cautious of the potential threats but he took it to far. It was almost impossible to prove your innocence. He made it so hard that to prove your innocence you had to tell the government about someone else who had affiliation with the communist life style. McCarthyism and the Witch Trials had different ways of following through with their prosecutions. During the Salem Witch Trials, the people who were accused of witchcraft and denied their affiliation with the devil were hanged. There was no sympathy to the false accusitions they made. When John Proctor takes the blame for his own wife, to avoid her death he accepts the punishment but will not sign that he is affiliated, Hale says â€Å"Excellent is it enough he confess himself. Let him sign it, let him sign it.† (Miller IV.141) John Proctor believes that his word is worth the amount of his signature because if he were to sign he would be signing his life way. He would lose his dignity and eventually he lost his life. During McCarthyism nobody was killed for being accused. Most people were imprisoned and came out of prison with a bad reputation. A major example of this was the Hollywood Ten. These were people in the filmmaking industry who were accused of communism. McCarthy assumed that they were affiliated because of their movies, or shows had hidden messages telling people to follow communism. After many court hearings these celebrities were convicted. In HCUA and The Hollywood Ten, â€Å"during and after the trials The Hollywood Ten were blacklisted. This meant that no one in the business would work with them for fear that they would be labeled a communist.† The Hollywood Ten lost their income because they had a lack of work and many of them received no further entry back into the film industry and also a bad reputation. Both of these historical events caused for public humiliation and fear. McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials were very complex events in history. From false accusations, fear, public humiliation and also public hysteria, these two events played a big role in the history of the United States.  McCarthyism was the fear of communism and in the Crucible it was the fear of witchcraft. The United States has faced many potential problems with fear and these two problems being an example of this concept. Both McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials were different events but show many correlations between each other.

Negro Speaks of Rivers Analysis

Proud to have endured some of the most powerful challenges mankind has ever witnessed, he Negro spirit has grown through time with its people. In Langston Hughes’s poem, â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers†, the speaker uses devices such as anaphora and allusion to convey pride in the Negro spirit. The anaphora present in the poem is seen in phrases such as, â€Å"I bathed,† â€Å"I built,† â€Å"I looked,†   and â€Å"I heard† . Each of these phrases has a declarative feeling, in which the speaker is strongly affirming that he, himself, has performed the actions. They dictate events in history, which give the Negro spirit its sense of valiance and pride. When the speaker proclaims, â€Å"I looked upon the Congo and raised the pyramids above it,† he is alluding to his ancestors’ past experiences as slaves. In which they lived in harsh conditions, and performed demanding tasks such as building the pyramids. After this, the Negro sp irit reminisces a time when Abraham Lincoln sailed down the Mississippi by recalling, â€Å"I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset†.With the use of this allusion, the spirit mentions how the hard work throughout history has paid off, and that it is something to be proud of. The spirit has â€Å"[known] ancient dusky rivers,† in which African ancestors have lived as slaves, been mistreated and had to earn their freedom. The Negro spirit is proud of his honorable acts, in which he rose from deep within the â€Å"dusky rivers† and climbed his way to a golden sunset.

Profile Essay on a Friend Named Matt

Matthew Mcfadden As he shouted across the soft spoken restaurant everyone stared at him, he then started doing a ridiculous dance and caught my undivided attention as my odd co worker. My fellow co-workers have told me so much about this man being lazy and annoying, so I pretended I had no interest. However, he caught my attention as to why he was the way he was. His name is Matt McFadden, and as of today we are close friends. Without even knowing he taught me through his actions never to judge a book by its cover. He ended up being one of the easiest people to get along with from the company. Everyone who loves him or hate him cannot help but to laugh or smile when he speaks to them. This new friendship between him and I impacted the way I judge people. Matt was born November 1st 1989 in the lovely city of North Royalton. He has one older sister exceptionally loving parents. As a young child, his idol was Jim Carrey. For those who do not know Jim Carrey, he is one of the funniest act ors who started his career as a comedian. Matt, at age three, would watch his movies and reenact his funniest moments. He would entertain his family and their friends every Friday night acting just like Jim Carrey. He has the natural ability to make anyone laugh at anytime. Twenty years later Jim Carrey still has an impact on him and taught him that life doesn’t always have to be serious; now making people smile is what Matt loves doing. Whenever situations get tough, he is always the one to step in and brighten up the moment. Not many people can do that, but Matt has that truly unique gift. When he was younger and got into trouble with his parents his goofy ways always seemed to save him. When he is in trouble at work, he continues to get away with it because of his silly personality. I cannot understand how he does it. It is his natural gift to laugh his way out of situations. While Matt is always making people laugh there is one thing that makes him happy. It is something I would never have imagined. About four years ago he was visiting his sister in Las Vegas, and the day they were leaving the Bellagio hotel was hosting a show with the water fountain. The song playing was called â€Å"Time to Say Goodbye† sung by opera singer Andre Bacilli. It was the most beautiful sight he has seen in his whole life. The water would dance with the song beat by beat; every beat had a pulse of water with beautiful lights shooting into the sunset skies. It brought tears to a 19 year old man’s eyes. Till this day that song brings him the most visual memory that makes him smile uncontrollably. The song not only makes him happy, it gives him a soft side that no one would ever believe he has. He is one of the most caring men I have come across in my life. However, when anyone first meets him no one would ever think this about him.He comes off extremely strong, loud, and to strangers, annoying. In order to know the real Matt McFadden, time must be well spent wi th him. Golf is another way to make this young man happy and relaxed. He loves this sport as if it were his own life. He plays every week at least one day, sometimes more. It calms him down and challenges him all at the same time. Golf is a sport of relaxation and silence. Even as a golfer he makes people laugh as they get frustrated with this sport. He is the happiest person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He impacts people into creating contagious smiles wherever he goes. He can turn the angriest man happy by cracking one of his corny jokes. The golfers enjoy his company at the course, and will always welcome him with open arms due to the joy he brings. Matt will be pursuing a career choice that is going to fit his personality exceptionally well. He wants to be a paramedic, and I believe it is a fantastic choice because he can make the sick people laugh and get the pain off their minds. This past week I had Matt over for some research. My father is terribly sick and just ou t of surgery. Five minutes spent with Matt, and he was rolling on the floor laughing. I had never seen my father so happy before. As of today my father continues to talk about how much he wants Matt to come over and hang out with him. My father is not a people person so that caught me off guard, and just proves how right I am about Matt. He will always be a friend forever because he never has reasons to fight nor have problems. To Matt, his mission as a man is to make the people around him happy.
